How to Make Your Own Playdough

Can you believe that something as simple as play dough has so many benefits for toddlers and young kids? Moldable clay that can be made in to anything your child can think up is not only the basis for imagination, but develops fine motor skills too. Although the commercial play dough is readily available, homemade versions are fun to make and don’t have that yucky chemical smell.

There are lots of recipes out there for play dough, but the best ones are cooked versions. Here is an easy Play Dough recipe for you to make with your toddler or preschooler.

Play Dough Recipe

3/4 cup Water
½ cup Salt
1/8 cup Vegetable Oil
1 cup Flour
1 tsp Cream of Tartar
Drops of Food Coloring
Optional:
½ tsp of “smelly stuff” ie: lemon extract, cinnamon extract etc.
Fine Glitter

• In saucepan on medium-low heat, mix water, salt and oil until warm and salt has dissolved.
• Drop in food coloring (one color per batch) and fun smelly stuff if you want it.
• Take off the heat and add flour, cream of tartar (and glitter if you are using)
• Stir until it makes a thick dough and pulls away from the sides of the pan. (This will get thick right away, so work fast.) Let cool. You may need to knead a little bit on the counter to make sure all the flour is mixed in.

This dough will keep well for months in plastic bags or airtight containers.

Something to try:
Squishing your fingers through colored dough is fun on it’s own, but I found that if I put on my son’s favorite music Steve Songs (excellent tapes, try them) or better yet, a story on tape from your local library. My son would sit quietly at the table happily creating masterpiece after masterpiece while listening to a fun song or a good story. When he was just over a year old, his favorite thing to do was “dough-dough”. ☺

Easy Chalk Paint

This is a simple way to get your kids outside, having fun and creating ART!

Home made chalk paint is super easy.   It is a good time to use egg dying cups or paper cups for easy clean up.

Mix together:

1/4 cup cornstarch

2 1/2 – 3 Tbs water

4-5 drops of food coloring (more for darker color)

Mix until cornstarch is dissolved into water.  It will be thick at first, but keep mixing.

My kids like to create “stories” on my driveway.  Besides having the best driveway or sidewalk in your neighborhood, it is easy to clean up.  Simply wash off with the hose, wait for it to dry…. and voila!  You are ready to start again
